Definition/ Content: Capacity of an space to prevent permeation by WATER, TEMPERATURE, ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES, SOUND, AIR, SUN, FIRE...

Objective: The student must acquire the knowledge of how to isolate an space from sound, water, air, temperature...

WATERTIGHT-Avoid permeation by WATER

How can it be avoided the permeation by water, depending on the geometry of the exterior surface?
It is a matter of design. It is a matter of constructing with pieces.
Overlaping the pieces, like scales, making a bridle joint, or making a continuous surface.

         A) OVERLAP-SCALES. Joint in differents levels. The water direction.
         Roof tiles  (ceramic, concrete, stone, plastic, waterproof coating, glass,…)
         Overlap distance


         B) BRIDLE JOINT. Joint in the same level.
         Instead of ovelaping the roof tiles, it can be done in the same level.
         Bridle joints panels: one is hollowed out to receive the end of the other. (ceramic, concrete, stone, plastic, glass….)

         C) CONTINUOUS  Synthetic chemical materials with no ending, applied by brush, gunited or pumped.

         D) SINGULAR ELEMENTS. Crosses

The Hyberbaric Chamber is a physiotherapy instrument consisting of a steel drum which serves to shut people and to produce a higher atmospheric pressure that what we usually have and provide pure oxygen to breathe. It's basis
is that our body needs a certain amount of this gas to keep working. In some diseases and accidents, we don't irrigated oxygen throughout the body. The purpose of the camera is to add more pressure on the blood plasma so the fluid is dissolved and can reach places it normally don't reach.

Its mechanism is derived from the physical laws of gas diffusion in the tissues under increased atmospheric pressure, which are Boyle's law and Henry's Law, and pharmacological principles of oxygen. Hyperbaric chambers (hyper = more, baro = pressure) may be called the most
developed stage of the first diving suits, which operated under the same physical principles to avoid decompression sickness when divers down to great depths.

Gore-Tex is a kind of fabric designed as an isolation material for clothes and shoes. In this example of a Gore-Tex boot, we can see how this five layers interact, protecting the feet from humidity and water. All of them are transpirable layers, this way the water vapour, as our sweat, can go out of the shoe, and the rain and puddle´s water stay outside of the boot. The three fisrt layers keep the water outside the boot. The most interior ones, keep the foot warm and with no humidity.
It is a perfect combination between transpiration and isolation,, which is reached through this kinds of materials.

Watertight: The scales on a shark's skin
